I’ve noticed that people ask me that same question a lot. At first, I too was shocked that my students, strangers on the street, and newly founded friends could ask such a question. I thought they might run off and tell someone important or something or that I might get fired. In time though, I’ve realized that is just doesn’t really matter. I know that I get paid lower than some and normal compared to others here in China. And by others I mean other laowai. I had a student ask me just how much I made last week, and even though I’ve told myself that it doesn’t really matter - it has been hard to get the words to come out and actually say them. I sorta have to prepare myself to say it. When I finally did write the number of my salary on the board, my student had two things to say. One: that isn’t a lot and two: you make more than me. After writing all of this though, I have realized one thing. Even though my students, most of which have jobs, ask me how much I make, I never turn the question on them. It seems that I still have some ground to cover before I become completely comfortable with this idea. And like I said, since I don’t care - I’ll say how much I make.

Both Phil and I make a whopping 3,600 RMB each a month.

What makes me sick is that there are other teachers in the same system as me with no more experience than myself that make 5,000 RMB a month.

With that said, I think that is why Americans and other Western cultures don’t share the information of what they make. When you find out that other people make more than you - you resent them and then you run off to your boss saying how life isn’t fair. Nothing good can come out of situation like that.

I could probably go on and on about this, but I have already written too much. So, I’ll shut up and leave now.
