The Ayi

Many years ago I met a South African in Argentina. We talked about our dream vacations. He told me that his ideal would be a rigorous hiking trip, staffed by servants who would serve him gourmet meals at the end of every day. When I told him that I was uncomfortable with the idea of servants he laughed and said, “you’re a dyed in the wool North American!”

An American friend of mine hired a cleaning lady a few years ago. She decided against using an organized maid service because she didn’t want to hire someone who would be cleaning houses forever. She told me she wanted to find, “some girl who is doing this to put herself through school,” and I couldn’t help but wonder, why would my friend use the same language to talk about maids that she would for prostitutes?

I have been thinking about this recently because I have hired a maid, or “ayi” as we say in China. Almost everyone we know in Qingdao has an ayi. Around the world, most people who can afford it hire similar help.

So why are Americans so embarrassed to admit it if they don’t strip their own sheets?

Americans like to believe that they live in a classless society. Hiring domestic help challenges that myth. The Chinese know that class divisions are real, and they are OK with that.

I am no longer troubled by the idea of having servants, as I was in my days of hiking around Argentina. I love having an ayi, and I am grateful to her every time I walk into my twinkling bathroom.

I would like to know why you think that you should not use the same language for a prostitute as a maid or ayi? or for that matter, a sales person. Its all really the same thing… just about selling personal services. The prostitutes job is just a bit more intimate & personal than that of the sales person, or even the maid. Over the years… I have met quite a few really salespeople that really go over the top in personal service. Generally they were not as intimate as the prostitute… but in many cases…. they were!

The difference is only that of degree of intimacy… and therefore perhaps maybe it is best to withhold judgment.

Good point. Far be it for me to denigrate members of the world’s oldest profession. I think that we should be more open and honest about all of these transactions, and we should not pass judgment on the maid nor the hooker nor their patrons.

I totally agree with Hal. It is all about intimacy. Personally I think that a maid is the most intimate of all
jobs. With prostitutes there is a certain degree of anonymity that protects both parties involved. You cant
get more intimate then what a maid does to keep your bathroom clean! What my cleaning lady did to keep our
bathroom clean I could never do. Hair on drains, pee drips on the toilet, etc etc etc. Your cleaning lady or
maid gets to know you in a way that even your mom cant parallel. I really miss my cleaning lady. We had
to let her go once we knew for sure Bill was changing firms/banks. I miss her so much. I refer to her as my
wife. It was the best money I ever spent!!
(If you could only see my bathroom! Its so embarassing! TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE, I’m an awful maid)
