Go South

Classes ended over a week ago, and we have had plenty of time to laze around. Josh decided that with nothing better to do, it might be fun to apply for a job. We sent our resumes to a school in the far south of the PRC. Within a day or so, we were hired. Now we are preparing to leave our little home in Jinzhou and move south. The job will be a short-term gig. We will teach an intensive program for eighteen days and then we are free to wander for the month of August. Our job in Qingdao will start next September. We are taking a train down the length of the country. If you are familiar with our other experiences on Chinese trains, this might surprise you. Our trip from Jinzhou to Qingdao was sixteen hours of standing room only in the lowest circle of hell. This time we will have beds. Our home for the summer is a small town. The nearest big city is Guangzhou, also known to Anglophones as Canton. It is also close to Hong Kong and Macau, and not far from Viet Nam. We are unsure about what kind of internet access we will have at our new accomodations, so our postings might become (even more) sporadic. But stay tuned. The next time you hear from us we will be able to describe our new adventures in South China.

Watch out for those Cantonese! You know the old saying – Cantonese will eat anything with four legs except for a table and anything that flies except for an airplane.

After four months in Dong Bei (North-East China, we would say back home) we are ready for a culinary adventure. The food in Jinzhou is bland as can be, so bring on the snakes!

Guangzhou is amazing, you will have a great time. And I love that when you get bored you apply for jobs! That’s a new one on me, but I’m sure my wallet wouldn’t mind if I started doing the same!
