Firefighter’s Full Employment & Other Observations

Josh and I are both feeling 100% better. We did not need to take antibiotics for our food poisoning. The traditional Chinese medicine worked well enough. After 4000 years of trial and error, Chinese herbalists have learned a thing or two. Still, we are hoping to receive a care package with a good supply of immodium for the next time this happens. We will avoid raw salads in restaurants, but we will never forsake street food. We are in China to experience the culture, and that includes curb-side barbeque. Now that the weather is warmer, there is even more street food to sample. There is a big night market downtown. We go there for the experience, and to eat. Our favorite things off the grill are chicken wings, squid and pumpkin. We avoid all the low quality merchandise on sale, like the cheap t-shirts, hats and shoes. There is an enormous amount of stuff on display in the night market. The night merchants eagerly try to push all of it. It may seem strange to see so much capitalism in the People's Republic of China, but that is the way it is. We almost never encounter Marxist-Leninist thought, either from our students, or elsewhere. They love Chairman Mao, but they also admire Comrade Deng Xiaoping, who said, "To be rich is glorious!" Of course, capitalism in China looks very different from capitalism in America. Here is an example: Last week, Josh had his classes debate the merits of banning cigarette smoking. Half the class had to argue for and half against. They were not allowed to choose their own sides. In thirteen classes, not one student argued that people should be allowed to smoke as a matter of personal freedom. And of course, no one gave any thought to the tobacco lobbies of North Carolina or Virginia. One student arguing for the ban said, cigarette smoking causes fires. Fair enough. When asked to counter that argument, a student on the other side said, firemen need jobs. If smoking were outlawed there would be fewer fires, and firemen would be put out of work. Keep smoking to guarantee full employment for firemen! I don't know if an American college student would have come up with that.

Why stop with firemen? Think about all the fire related renewal: new construction and all those consumer products that get to be replaced. Just like hurricanes mean beach houses never get too old! Sounds like a good class.

Glad you’re enjoying the street food again!
